The Mayor of Earley, Councillor Anne Bassett attended the Wokingham Borough Council Sports Awards at Cantley Park on Friday 26th November and was delighted to present Colin and Kate Stonehouse with the Spirit of Sport award.
This award is sponsored by Earley Town Council for those demonstrating Olympic sporting values and the Corinthian spirit of fair play, friendship, team spirit, determination, and sportsmanship.
Colin and Kate are worthy winners having set up the Berkshire Brigands mixed ability adult rugby union team during lockdown. Brigands was inspired by their son Duncan, a young man with Downs Syndrome, who wanted to play rugby with his elder brother. The team welcomes players with learning disabilities, autism, or other barriers and those without. It has been a huge success and now has twenty-four regular members, training twice a week at the Reading Rugby Club ground in Sonning.
